Migrate Existing Site

Use this feature to transfer a site hosted elsewhere into your Man Over Machine hosting account.

You can move sites to Man Over Machine hosting either with our migration tool or by asking our hosting support team to handle it manually for you.

We suggest using the migration tool. It's designed to make the process quicker and easier, and it can automatically fix common issues that might disrupt a smooth transfer.

Before diving deep into this guide, know that we offer two migration paths for your convenience. You can either take the reins yourself or let our team manage it for you. Use the Man Over Machine migration tool for a streamlined and efficient way to transfer your site. This method ensures a smooth transition, minimizing potential issues and simplifying the process for you. Just follow the on-screen instructions after initiating the migration.

The Man Over Machine migration tool operates server-to-server through FTP, making it much sturdier than migrations driven by PHP (like plugins).

This tool is also less likely to face timeout problems compared to PHP. It manages all file transfers and updates URLs seamlessly, without needing software or tools that many users might not often use. Unless the original server has FTP problems, even the most skilled web admins would be hard-pressed to execute a quicker and more secure migration.

To transfer a site to your Man Over Machine hosted account, simply click on the "Begin Migration" link in the "Migrate Existing Site" section.

On the following screen, you'll see a dropdown menu showing all the sites currently linked to The Hub on Man Over Machine. If the site you're aiming to migrate isn't on that list, it means it's not yet connected. In that case, click on the "Please add it to your Hub first" link and follow the steps given. After connecting the site, choose it from the dropdown menu and press the "Next" button to move forward.

Next, the system will ask you to choose the migration technique you prefer. To utilize the Man Over Machine migration tool, pick the (S)FTP migration choice. After making your selection, click the "Next" button to continue.

In the following stepit will ask you to provide the (S)FTP details for the site you're looking to migrate.

If you're unsure about the (S)FTP details for the site you're migrating, you can typically find them in the dashboard or control panel of your current hosting provider. If they aren't available, you'll need to set them up and then input them into the provided fields on Man Over Machine.

Here's a breakdown of the information you'll need:

• Host: This is the (S)FTP hostname you use to access the files of your site.
• Port: This refers to the port your host uses for its connection protocol.
• FTP Username: This is the username of an account that has access to the root of your WordPress site.
• FTP Password: This is the password associated with the above username.
• WordPress Install Path: When Man Over Machine's servers try to access your site, they'll attempt to find your site's files. Most of the time, this isn't an issue. 

However, sometimes the path to those files might have a directory that our servers can't identify, which could cause the migration to fail. If you're aware of the FTP path to your site's files, input it here. If you need help finding this path, our "Getting Started" documentation has a section titled "Getting FTP 

• Credentials From Your Host" that can guide you.
• Source Site Hosting Provider: This is the name of the hosting provider you're currently using (for example, GoDaddy).

Once you've completed these fields, you will be prompted to "Start Migration"

Next, you'll be presented with a progress screen, similar to the depicted image, where you can track the migration's progress and get an estimated completion time. Keep in mind that the duration of the migration largely depends on your site's size and the performance of your current hosting provider.

Feel free to leave this screen while the migration is ongoing. Man Over Machine will notify you via email once it's done. If you change your mind or encounter issues, there's an option to halt the migration by pressing the "Cancel migration" button.

The time it will take to complete the migration can vary based on a few factors. The overall size of your site and the speed of the network. You can always leave this page while the migration is in progress, you will receive an email to your listed email address when the migration is complete. 

After a successful migration, you can view your content at both the original URL and your Man Over Machine site, unless there's been some change or issue with the original site.

We recommend checking out your site on Man Over Machine to ensure the migration went smoothly. To do this, click on the "WP Admin" option next to the temporary domain in The Hub site manager on Man Over Machine.

If everything looks good and you're happy with the migration, you can then proceed to attach your permanent domain name and modify your DNS records. For guidance on this, refer to the Man Over Machine DNS Records documentation.
